All of a sudden, federal policymakers have noticed that the U.S. Postal Service is staggering toward financial collapse. There’s little consensus on a solution, but the ensuing attention is generating plenty of news. Here’s a recap of major developments just on Monday:
1) The Obama administration publicly outlined one approach for putting the Postal Service back in the black (check out p. 23 of the pdf).
2) A House Oversight and Government Reform subcommittee scheduled a Wednesday vote on legislation by Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., offering an opposing strategy.
3) Rep. Gerald Connolly, D-Va., and 74 other lawmakers released a letter to Postal Regulatory Commission Chairman Ruth Goldway, objecting to USPS plans for the possible closing of thousands of post offices.
4) The American Postal Workers Union, the National Association of Letter Carriers and the National Postal Mail Handlers Union announced the second round of a national television ad campaign with a commercial that faults Congress for the Postal Service’s financial mess.
Meanwhile, the Postal Service continued to deliver the mail and to lose money. Anything we missed?

It almost appears that (we) the Retirees need to go back and straignten out the mess that has been made since we left.
HR1351 would save the Postal Service and put us back in the black. It is a bill that has sweeping bipartisan support. The Issa bill has little support and would be the final nail in the coffin. As I understand it only he and one other member of the committee want it. They don’t want HR1351 and as chairman he won’t allow it to go to the committee for a vote. Reason, if it passes the committee, which it would, then the House would vote on it and pass it. Please contact your Representatives and Senators and ask them to support this bill. If it can pass the House it would then go to the Senate. In my state we have the support of all our Representatives and Senators.
I can tell you I am recently retired and am stunned when I receive updates as to the latest goings on within the USPS. The reorganizations that have occurred within some administrative functions are further crippling the USPS and bleeding the place dry. High priced personnel sitting around DOING NOTHING!!!! Then those who do have some integrity are for the most part CLUELESS – I cannot imagine how the USPS will remain afloat without some serious taxpayer dollars – FOREVER. It is pathetic. And our leaders at the top are guilty of closing their eyes to reality. They need to take a firehose and clean out ALL the administrative offices from HQ to the field.
