On Sept. 11, 2001, I was a high school senior sitting in my shop class, having just completed basic training for the Army. The world as I knew it was perfect.
Then I was serving in the Army Reserves. Although it was only one weekend a month, when the president called out to his military, we all responded — Reserves, National Guard and active duty. We all rose equally and said, “This we’ll defend.”
Now I work helping people join the military service as an Army civilian. I look at the skyline of New York City and I remember it how it was before this horrific event. Better that I’m reminded of the lives that were stolen and the price we as Americans paid to protect our liberties.
